I attended Guy Haywood's conference on Ben Nicholson at Kettle's Yard. His wife Winifred Nicholson (British, 1893-1981) is one of the most important and best loved artists in Kettle’s Yard collection (Music of Colour.) Winifred painted a double-sided portrait.

On the back of "Amy in the kitchen at Banks Head" is a portrait of Vera Moore.

The concert pianist Vera Moore was a close friend of Winifred Nicholson and was Constantin Brancusi's partner. Source : https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20025/lot/114/

Détail The Fishermen's Farewell by Christopher Wood is a portrait of Winifred, Ben and their first son in Cornwall

I took interest in the Nicholson and HS Jim Ede since I wrote this book on the English pianist Vera Moore.Jim Ede is said to be the matchmaker between Constantin Brancusi and Vera Moore.

"Naturally, as soon as the war had ended Winifred [Nicholson] began to travel abroad again. She returned to France and this time visited Vera Moore, who had been marooned in Paris and somehow survived : « I’m looking forward to [visiting France again] so very much – to the painting light…and to Vera’s marvellous playing. After her tribulations during the war, Moore had ended up in a house on the bank of the river Cher, a tributary of the Loire". Excerpt from Winifred Nicholson: Liberation of colour by the courtesy of the author and art historian Jovan Nicholson.

Cordialement, Ingmar Lazar

Vera Moore, pianiste, de Dunedin à Jouy-en-Josas is not a definitive biography, it is the first

The least known but most important woman in Brancusi's life was the English concert pianist Vera Moore, whom he met in 1930

The sculptor Constantin Brancusi had a son by an English concert pianist named Vera Moore.

I did a great deal of research to find out why it was impossible for her to continue her concertizing career after WWII.

Alexander Turnbull Library – National Library of New Zealand - Wellington

International concert pianist

A New Zealand grown pianist, Vera Moore was born in Dunedin. She took lessons from her elder brother before learning an enormous amount from Leonard Borwick who had  studied piano under Clara Schumann. One of his favourite pupils, she toured the world and was playing in classical concerts. The WWII caused her to retire from this musical career and she stepped up her teaching at home in Jouy-en-Josas (France)

Jane Adams' site offers a wide range of informations with many drawings as you can see above. 1, 2, 3 from the left. You'll find the drawings  from Bénédicte Koudry-Lahlali on the covers of the book and inside.

As far as I know, she left no discography.

Vivienne Sands – NEW ZEALAND - Petite-nièce de Vera Moore

Hello Christophe,

Your book arrived yesterday, and I have read it with interest. It is a fascinating account, well researched, and displays balance of factual information and imaginative enhancement. The result is tasteful and respectful to all parties mentioned therein. Thank you for your painstaking efforts in bringing to light the musical attainments of a lost and valued relative. One small criticism would be the omission of birth and death dates, outlining the circumstances of Vera’s final years and demise, and there is an error regarding the number of Vera’s siblings –there were five, not seven. They were also musicians apart from Mrs. Clarabelle Ball of Copthorne, Sussex.

It would have been difficult piecing together the pieces of the jigsaw to produce a cohesive biography, and there are still some lacunae which may eventually be filled.

Congratulations on your excellent achievement.

With appreciation and best regards,

Vivienne Sands

I haven’t heard of any other book written about Vera Moore, so yours is almost certainly the first. It was only in the last few years that any information on her was available on the internet.

Vera Moore has been under the patronage of Helen Sutherland

English poet, Kathleen Raine wrote in her auto-biography (The Land Unknown):

“Vera Moore, the pianist was her special protégée.” She [Helen Sutherland] was entirely responsive to whatever each of her friends had to bring. After dinner, she would settle in her chair, her dogs at her feet […] listen to Ben Nicholson. […] Or Vera Moore would play Mozart and Bach and Couperin.

I quote Andy Croft :

The pianist Vera Moore was staying at Bamburgh, and she and Swingler played a good deal together, including a performance one evening before the assembled house party of Mozart’s flute concerto & several Bach sonatas. (excerpt from A life of Randall Swingler of Andy Croft)

Moore Family Background

Vivienne Sands, great-niece of VM, gave me this account on her family :

"Vera Moore was the youngest of five children born to Herbert and Charlotte Moore in Dunedin NZ in the early 1900s. Her father was organist at Dunedin Baptist Church, and a leading teacher of piano and theory. The eldest son, George Frederick, was a professor of Piano at the Royal Academy, London through 1920 – 1950 approximately, and an overseas examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music."
